Munokokwa Mese
Released in Zimbabwe by ZMC in April of 2004, Munokokwa Mese is my second album. When I visited Zimbabwe in June/July of 2002, I had made contact with one of Zimbabwe’s most renowned singers/musicians, Isaac Chirwa. Chirwa had been hearing my music, and as a person most interested in reggae himself, he thought a collaboration would be great. Although I was never going to abandon my reggae forte, I wanted to do an album with a Zimbabwean/Southern African flavor. When I returned to Zimbabwe in December/January of 2002/3 Chirwa and I worked on the album, sung mostly in Shona and Ndebele with a couple of songs in English.
I thoroughly enjoyed making this album and the memories are great. I had the help of Patience Musa and Sihle Ngwabi on vocals, and Mono Mukundu on guitar. Isaac Chirwa played bass and guitar on some of the tracks and Roger Mbambo (guitar), Zenzo Hlaseka and Gideon Zamimba (keyboards) stopped by to lend a hand. Local dancehall sensation Dj Taona did a new combination/remix with me on “Early In The Morning,” (a song from my previous album) now renamed “Teerera Achikumbira”. This became one of the most requested songs on the radio in Zimbabwe. The Mahendere Brothers provided backing for most of the songs on the album. The music speaks for itself; the Brothers were fantastic!
I spent the period between February and May 2004 in Zimbabwe and recorded four videos of songs from the album. The songs for which videos were recorded are “Secret,” “Pangu Pangu,” “Vakandikomborera,” and “Kundibatisa Dombo.”
